Specifications

1.1 – All work shall be performed as per plans and specifications and shall include the supply of all materials such as granular, concrete, colour hardeners, release agents, imprinting tools and sealers.

1.2 – Samples shall be available for approval as well as references of past installations which are comparable to the project in question, in terms of size and complexity.

1.3 – The concrete contractor must satisfy the requirements of the project in respect to job supervisor/foreman, equipment and qualified labour force to meet necessary deadlines.

2.1 – The contractor is to warranty, as noted in the Terms and Conditions of the Contract, the installation for a period of five (5) years from the date of installation.

3.1 – The contractor shall be responsible for all fine grades. ¾” crusher run shall be used as granular sub-grade and shall be compacted in two (2) lifts.

3.2 – Granular sub-grade thickness unless noted, shall be 6” – 8” on driveways and 3”-4” on all other areas.

3.3 – All fine grades shall be done to ensure a constant concrete thickness. Uneven fine grades will not be accepted.

4.1 – All concrete to be used shall be designed to have a minimum compressive strength of 32MPa (Patterned Concrete Installations) and 35MPa (Exposed Concrete Installations) and shall be an approved Patterned Concrete mix design to ensure proper workability for the use of colour hardeners and imprinting tools.

4.2 – Concrete coarse aggregate shall consist of a blend of 10mm and 20mm crushed limestone.

4.3 – All mixing water shall be fresh, clean and potable.

4.4 – Air entrainment agents are to be used although percentages shall not exceed 8% nor be less than 5%.

4.5 – Concrete slump shall not exceed 100mm without the use of high-range water reducers.

4.6 – No poly shall be used as a vapour barrier to the underside of the slab.

4.7 – Concrete thickness unless noted, shall be 6” (min) on driveways and 4” (min) on all other areas.

4.8 – Construction Manager to engage an independent testing agency, as necessary to perform concrete testing.

5.1 – Reinforcing steel shall be of high-quality industry standard and have a minimum thickness of 10M.

5.2 – Concrete slab shall be reinforced two ways and tied at a spacing of 18”x18” o/c tied on driveways and 24″ x 24″ o/c tied on all other areas

5.3 – Step construction shall have ledge supports consisting of 8” x 15M rebar dowels at 12” spacing to be drilled into the existing foundation.

6.1 – Colour to be used shall be ready to use, dry shake colour hardener supplied by a Patterned Concrete approved manufacturer

6.2 – Colour hardener shall be applied at a rate of approximately 60lbs per 100 square feet. This application of colour hardener shall be floated into moist concrete, then lightly trowelled prior to the imprinting procedure.

6.3 Concrete contractor must have a minimum of five (5) years experience in applying and finishing colour hardeners on exterior concrete finishes.

6.4 – Vertical Surfaces: Once the concrete is self-supporting, colour hardeners will be applied as necessary to exposed vertical surfaces. Colour hardener is to be mixed with water to the proper consistency, then trowel applied at a thickness required by the depth of imprinting pattern.

7.1 – All release agents to be used shall be a dry powder type supplied by a Patterned Concrete approved manufacturer.

7.2 – Apply powder release agent evenly over the freshly trowelled concrete surface. At no time shall the release agent be floated or trowelled into wet concrete.

8.1 – All imprinted concrete shall be performed by use of pre-molded rigid tools manufactured by Patterned Concrete Industries Inc. Toronto, Ontario (416) 661-3007. www.patternedconcrete.com

8.2 – The contractor shall be licensed and trained by Patterned Concrete Industries Inc. Canadian agent – Patterned Concrete Ontario Inc. Toronto, Ontario (416) 661-3007. www.patternedconcrete.ca

9.1 – All control joints to be applied by the method of dry-cutting with a diamond blade saw.

9.2 – Control joints to be installed at a depth of ¼ thickness of the slab.

9.3 – The use of an expansion joint fiberboard shall be used when new concrete is to be poured against an existing concrete surface.

10.1 – All driveways to be water cured upon control joint installation.

10.2 – All imprinted concrete surfaces shall be treated with a deep penetrating sealer – MATT FINISH.

10.3 – All sealers to be supplied by a Patterned Concrete approved manufacturer and must contain curing compounds.

10.4 – All concrete to be sealed must be pressure washed and buffed to ensure a clean surface to allow proper penetration of sealer. All concrete must be left to cure for a minimum of 3 days and all concrete must be dry prior to sealing.

11.1 – Due to the handcrafted nature of installing Patterned Concrete on the work site, variations in colour hardeners, release agents, texture and tiny stretch marks on the surface are acceptable and allowed.
